COMPLETE THE PASS ON SUPER BOWL SUNDAY Give Your Keys to a Designated Driver Before the Game Begins

January 30, 2009

RALEIGH — The Governor’s Highway Safety Program announced today that it is joining efforts with state and local law enforcement officers to remind motorists to act responsibly by designating a sober driver if they plan on consuming alcohol this Super Bowl weekend.

“We are working overtime this year to remind fans to play it safe on Super Bowl Sunday,” said Darrell Jernigan, director of the GHSP. “Wherever you are watching the Super Bowl, if you plan on consuming alcohol, pass your keys to a sober, designated driver before the big game begins.”

Super Bowl Sunday is one of America’s most entertaining national sporting events where friends and families gather to socialize and watch the game. It can also be a dangerous time on the roadways due to impaired driving.

In 2008’s Super Bowl weekend, there were 145 alcohol-related North Carolina auto accidents that resulted in four fatalities.
