Law Firm Walks to Its Heart’s Content

The members of HensonFuerst do more than fight for their clients-they’re also fighting for the millions of people affected by heart disease, the nation’s leading killer. For the third year in a row, the firm’s members walked to raise funds and awareness during the American Heart Association’s Start! Heart Walk in Rocky Mount on Saturday, Oct. 24. The team raised more than $1,000 this year, bringing the total for the past three years to nearly $3,000!

“We want to show everyone how strongly we feel about being heart healthy and keeping fit,” attorney David Henson said. “We’re working together to raise money for research and encourage our friends, family, and neighbors to lead healthier, longer lives.”

Leading by Example
The members of HensonFuerst know the importance of heart health at any age. Whether it’s participating in triathlons, running for a cause, or cycling 100 miles, many firm members-whose ages range from 18 to 70-have participated in athletic events to raise money for various charities. To recognize the importance of being healthy as well as giving back to the community, the firm established the HensonFuerst Health Initiative to encourage the community and firm members to prevent injuries, promote health and fitness, and aid organizations committed to improving health and well-being.

New North Carolina Law Now in Effect Doubles Time Limit on Some Lawsuits

Until this week, October 1, to be exact, North Carolina’s statue of repose stated that a consumer could not sue a manufacturer over a defective product if the defect occurred six years after the product was originally sold. If you think six years sounds like plenty of time, consider this: if a car crash happened because of a manufacturing or design defect, the consumer injured by the crash couldn’t sue if the car was FIRST sold more than six years ago. That’s right, the clock starts ticking with the first sale to any consumer, not just when the current owner bought it. Even though 12 years is much better, and is now the law in North Carolina, some states have no time limit on bringing such lawsuits. If you, or someone you care about, has been injured due to a defective product – even if you think just maybe the product might have been defective – give us a call or better yet, send me, David Henson, an email: dhenson@lawmed.com. GOVERNOR’S HIGHWAY SAFETY PROGRAM AWARDS MORE THAN $9 MILLION IN HIGHWAY SAFETY GRANTS

RALEIGH — The N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program announced today that it has approved more than $9 million in highway safety grants for the 2010 grant year. A total of 139 grants were awarded to police departments, sheriff’s offices and other state and local agencies across North Carolina.

“We are pleased that we are able to provide these funds, which are aimed at improving highway safety in North Carolina,” said GHSP Director Darrell Jernigan. “They provide law enforcement agencies the resources to continue to focus on traffic safety, keeping our cities and towns a safer place to travel.”

The funds are from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and must be used towards highway safety projects. Agencies apply for the grants annually and are chosen based on need, commitment to highway safety, traffic crash and fatality data.

GHSP’s mission is to promote highway safety awareness and reduce the number of traffic crashes and fatalities in North Carolina through the planning and execution of safety programs.

President Barack Obama visits Raleigh, North Carolina

Erica McAdoo

On July 29, 2009, President Barack Obama visited Needham B. Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC where he conducted a town hall style meeting addressing his healthcare reform bill and the economy. Entrance to the event was granted only to those lucky enough to have secured a ticket. Miraculously, my husband’s name was one of those randomly drawn to receive two tickets.

“Booze It & Lose It: Operation Firecracker” Campaign

June 30, 2009

RALEIGH — Gov. Bev Perdue today announced that state and local law enforcement officers will be out in full force over the Fourth of July holiday as part of the “Booze It & Lose It: Operation Firecracker” campaign. Checkpoints and stepped-up patrols will be conducted Monday, June 29, through Sunday, July 5, across the state in an effort to remove impaired drivers from the roads.

“Too many people fail to understand that alcohol and driving don’t mix. Impaired driving is no accident, nor is it a victimless crime,” Perdue said. “Law enforcement officers will crack down on impaired drivers, ensuring that everyone is celebrating the holiday responsibly.”

There were 377 alcohol-related crashes, 322 with injuries, and 12 that resulted in fatalities, over the Independence Day week last year.

Officers charged more than 1,900 North Carolina motorists with driving while impaired during the 2008 “Booze It & Lose It: Operation Firecracker” campaign. More than 5,700 stepped-up patrols and checkpoints were held.

State cracks down on Raleigh nursing home abuse

March 10, 2009

The News and Observer reported that a newly appointed head of the Department of Health and Human Services has become stricter on punishment for Raleigh nursing home abuse.

Since assuming the role, he has started putting people involved in North Carolina nursing home abuse cases on administrative leave until situations are investigated.

Workers, however, feel that this aggressive action is too strong. If they’re caring for a violent patient, they have to do what they can to control the patient without seeming abusive.

The secretary stated that his intention is to prevent cases of Raleigh nursing home neglect and abuse so that patients can receive the care they deserve.
