Auto Accident Checklist

If you’ve been involved in a car wreck, use this checklist to make sure you’ve taken the right steps after your accident:

• See the doctor.

  If you are hurt, make sure you see a doctor. It is important to get treatment if you are hurting or are having problems. You also need medical documentation of your injuries.

• Take photos.

  Take photographs of your injuries, the accident scene, and the cars involved in the accident.

• Gather evidence.

  Keep any items, such as pill bottles, receipts, glass removed from cuts, or physical aides you used during the recovery process.

• Describe your accident.

  Either draw a detailed diagram or write down exactly how your accident happened, including the lane you were traveling in and the path of the other vehicle(s) involved.

• Get a copy of the police report.

  Visit your local police station to file a report or obtain a copy of the report filed by officers at the scene of the accident.

• Call your insurance company.

  Call your insurance agent to notify him or her of your accident. Don’t share any details about your injuries.
