Foodborne Illness

Where Do I Start?

Restaurants and retailers are obligated to serve and sell fresh, safe food and beverages. If you are exposed to contaminated food and suffer serious illness as a result, take these important steps to protect your health and legal rights:

  • Seek medical care.

Foodborne illness can cause long-term damage to your health. Be sure you get the medical care you need immediately if you think you are suffering from a serious foodborne disease.
  • Report the incident to local health inspectors.

By alerting local health officials, you can prevent others from being exposed to the contaminated food. Inspectors will survey the food establishment or products in question and deal with the problem accordingly.
  • Document any evidence you have to support your claim.

Save any food packaging, receipts, or additional evidence. If there are witnesses of your foodborne illness or others you know of that were injured by the contaminated food, document their contact information and any contributing details. Contamination cases are easiest to prove when there is a record that others have been exposed and suffer injuries similar to yours.
