2013 Initiatives and Events
Roanoke Rapids Boys and Girls Club
We delivered more than $400 in donations to the Boys and Girls Club of Roanoke Rapids! The donations were collected at our Stand Up! Anti-Bullying Festival in November. We'd like to thank Mr. Pope of H.D. Pope Funeral Home for orchestrating the Car and Bike Show to raise these funds. We'd also like to thank our other vendors who contributed through donations.
Stand Up! Anti-Bullying Festival
HensonFuerst Attorneys is proud to announce the Stand Up! Anti-Bullying Festival, to be held Saturday, November 9, 2013. The event will take place at Royal Palace Theatre in Roanoke Rapids from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event features the Chris Hendricks Band, motivational speaker, Ahmed Toure and several other entertainers, vendors, and contests. Triangle Walk to Defeat ALS
We were proud to have a HensonFuerst team at this year’s Walk to Defeat ALS on April 13th. We soared past our fundraising goal of $5,000 and landed at $6,210.20! Thank you to everyone who joined us in supporting the ALS Association and their efforts to help people with Lou Gehrig’s disease.”
HensonFuerst Team Participates in NCAJ Seminar
Attorneys David Henson and Adam Foggia participated in the North Carolina Advocates for Justice Disbursements 2013 seminar on February 22nd. David served as the co-chair of the seminar and Adam spoke on the topic of “Minor Settlements/Structured Settlements”, which explains all the processes and laws involved when settling a case. The NCAJ is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association dedicated to protecting people’s rights through professional and community legal education, championing individual rights, and protecting the safety of North Carolina’s families — in the workplace, in the home, and in the environment.
Walk to Defeat ALS
Maggie Davis, Angela Hopkins, and Mia Davis are three HensonFuerst team members who participated in today’s meeting to kick off the "2013 Triangle Walk to Defeat ALS,” led by Kara Strang. Kara, who is the Development Coordinator for the local Jim "Catfish" Hunter Chapter of the ALS Association, handed out packets of information that explain more about ALS, how we can be more involved, tips for fundraising, and how to organize a team. Team HensonFuerst is already registered for the walk and we are officially recruiting walkers!

National Wear Red Day
February 1st was National Wear Red Day! HensonFuerst staff members all showed support for the American Heart Association by wearing red. As an added incentive, employees who donated $10 to the AHA were allowed to wear jeans for the day.
"Behind Barz" is a magazine for motorcycle enthusiasts (as in "behind handlebars"). HensonFuerst understands the safety concerns of anyone who enjoys riding. That’s why our firm is proud to be new advertisers in "Behind Barz" for 2013. Even better: This magazine, which is published six times a year, is available free of charge in our Raleigh and Rocky Mount offices! Stop by and pick up your copy any time.

Let’s Go Mighty Warriors!
HensonFuerst Attorneys is proud to support the North Edgecombe High School’s Indoor Track Team! We purchased equipment for the team and helped send them to the State Finals. We understand the importance of developing programs like this to strengthen these young athletes both physically and mentally. We are eager to continue doing our part to build these young students up and encourage the kind of teamwork and comradery that will lead to a bright future.
Dare to Care Food Drive
In November of 2012, HensonFuerst Attorney took part in a 2-week collection period for the North Carolina Advocates for Justice (NCAJ) "Dare to Care" Food Drive. We collected items in our Raleigh and Rocky Mount offices and donated them to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
Halloween Trick-or-Treat Bags
In the month of October, HensonFuerst are providing reflective Halloween trick-or-treat bags to area schools to help keep children safe this Halloween. The reflective bags are meant to make the children more noticeable while they are collecting candy in local neighborhoods where cars might be present. The bags will also be available at the WRAL booth at the NC State Fair in October. Please stop by and visit the attorneys and pick up a bag for your children!
3rd Annual Five-O Memorial Bicycle Ride
On Aug. 26, Thomas Henson (third from left) and other members of the HensonFuerst Cycling Team participated in the 3rd Annual Five-O Memorial Bicycle Ride. This fundraiser benefits the Raleigh Police Memorial Foundation, an all-volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to honoring Raleigh's fallen police officers. We are proud to help support this organization's mission.
BIANC’s Educational Day at the Legislature
We were honored to participate in the Brain Injury Association of North Carolina’s Educational Day at the Legislature, which is designed to promote legislative awareness of the needs of traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients and their families. David Larson, one of our TBI lawyers, was on hand to answer questions during the event.
North Carolina Tour de Cure
We rode in the North Carolina Tour de Cure again this year and had a wonderful time raising funds and awareness for the American Diabetes Association. To date, the HensonFuerst Cycling Team has raised more than $100,000 for the Tour since they began participating in the event!
Triangle Walk to Defeat ALS
The Triangle Walk to Defeat ALS was a success. The local Jim "Catfish" Hunter chapter of the ALS Association raised a total of $329,265.57, beating the previous record. Team HensonFuerst was the second-highest corporate team. Thanks to everyone who walked or donated to help us raise money for this amazing organization. Because of your efforts, the ALS Association will be able to continue to help people with Lou Gehrig’s disease.
HensonFuerst Awards PSA Contest Winners
We’re excited to announce the winners of our fourth annual bicycle safety PSA contest for local middle and high school students. Congratulations to Alex Hendrix and Makaila Roberts for taking first place in their age categories!
Children’s Book Bank
We collected 436 books for the Down East Partnership for Children book drive. The books will be given to underprivileged children in Nash and Edgecombe counties. Statistics show that low-income children have the least access to books, and that early reading experiences can make a huge difference in literacy, test scores, and graduation rates. One small book for a child, one giant benefit to mankind!

NCAJ Dare to Care: Feed Those in Need Food Drive
We participated in the annual North Carolina Association for Justice's Dare to Care: Feed Those in Need Food Drive and collected more than 1,000 pounds of food that benefited people in central and eastern North Carolina.
American Heart Association Start! Heart Walk
Several members from our firm participated in the American Heart Association Start! Heart Walk on Saturday, October 22. It was a beautiful day to be out walking for this worthy cause.
ALS Outreach Professionals Conference
HensonFuerst was proud to sponsor the 6th Annual ALS Outreach Professionals Conference on July 30. This year's main topic addressed artificial ventilation as a choice for ALS patients. This cause is important to the members of the law firm, as attorney Bob Fuerst is on the organization's board of directors.
United Community Ministries Food Drive
After learning the shelves of the United Community Ministries Food Pantry were almost bare, we hosted a drive to help collect much-needed food and personal hygiene items for the organization.
North Carolina Tour de Cure
For the sixth consecutive year, the HensonFuerst Cycling Team raced to find a cure for diabetes during the 2011 North Carolina Tour de Cure. The team raised the most funds for the event, collecting more than $32,000!
Cycling Safety PSA Contest
For the third year in a row, we held our cycling safety video PSA contest for local students. We received some amazing entries and are pleased to announce Frank Brechbial, Kyle Messina, and Makaila Roberts as the 2011 winners.
Relay For Life of Nash County
We were part of the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life on April 29 and 30 at the Rocky Mount Athletic Complex. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of everyone on our team, we raised nearly $1,500 to benefit this amazing cause!
Walk to Defeat ALS
We were proud to be a gold-level sponsor of the "Walk to Defeat ALS" fundraiser on April 2, which benefited the North Carolina's Jim "Catfish" Hunter Chapter of The ALS Association. The Bob Fuerst Team raised $3,530—well above the team goal of $2,000.
We held a flapjack fundraiser to benefit Relay For Life on March 5 at Applebee's restaurant in Rocky Mount.
Ride for the Rock
We were proud to be the title sponsor for the Ride for the Rock fundraiser on March 5. Thank you to everyone who came out to support Mark "The Rock" Ornitz and the Brain Injury Association of North Carolina.
National Pediatric Acquired Brain Injury Tour
Several of our members attended part of the National Pediatric Acquired Brain Injury Tour from January 28 to 31, when the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation and the Brain Injury Association of North Carolina hosted discussions about pediatric acquired brain injuries.
2010 Initiatives and Projects
"Dare to Care: Feed Those in Need" NCAJ Fall Food Drive
We worked with the North Carolina Advocates for Justice in a statewide food collection drive from November 1 through 12, and we are excited to announce that we collected 1,276-lbs of non-perishable groceries! Our firm also made a cash contribution to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, which distributed the collected items.
Twin Counties Start! Heart Walk
We were well represented at the Start! Heart Walk fundraiser in Rocky Mount on October 23. Extra thanks to Sheila and her team for all their excellent efforts, and thanks to everyone who gave their time to participate! The event raised nearly $100,000 for the American Heart Association.
Bike MS: Historic New Bern Ride
Congratulations to members of the HensonFuerst Cycling Team who participated in the Bike MS: Historic New Bern Ride on September 11 and 12. This two-day cycling event raised funds to support people living with multiple sclerosis in eastern North Carolina and throughout the United States.
North Carolina Tour de Cure
The HensonFuerst Cycling Team joined hundreds of fellow cyclists as they rode to raise funds and awareness for the American Diabetes Association during the North Carolina Tour de Cure. In addition to being the 2010 Tour chairman, attorney Thomas Henson, Jr. served as the captain of the HensonFuerst Cycling Team. They raised an impressive $20,650 for the event, making them one of the Top 50 Fundraising Teams in the country!

Rocky Mount Fun Run for Charities
HensonFuerst members joined more than 500 walkers and runners for Reach Out Rocky Mount's Fun Run for Charities on Saturday, May 15. The event brought the community together while raising funds for Rocky Mount's nonprofit organizations, schools, service clubs, and faith-based outreach programs.
White Lake Sprint Triathlon
Nearly 20 members of HensonFuerst, along with their friends and family, proudly participated in the 2010 Relay for Life of Nash County on April 23. We are excited to announce our team raised a total of $915.25 for this year's event and tied for third place for the Banner Walk.
Ride for the Rock Benefit Cycling Event
National Wear Red Day
To draw attention to the serious effects heart disease has on women, we clad ourselves in crimson on National Wear Red Day sponsored by the American Heart Association. Wearing red is an easy, powerful way to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease and stroke, the No. 1 killer of women in America.
Flynn Christian Fellowship Home for Men Telethon
We supported the Flynn Christian Fellowship Home, a local nonprofit that assists recovering alcoholics and addicts, by donating both funds and time during the nonprofit's first-ever telethon on January 24. Attorney Bill Hoyle presented the organization with a $500 donation during the telethon, volunteered as a phone operator, and assisted callers. The telethon raised more than $13,000 to support the organization.
Thomas Henson, Jr. Receives Achievement Award
On January 23, the American Diabetes Association awarded a Fundraising Achievement Award to attorney Thomas Henson, Jr., who led the HensonFuerst Cycling Team to raise $15,277.50—one of the highest amounts raised by a team in 2010.
2009 Initiatives and Projects
American Heart Association's Start! Heart Walk
For the third consecutive year, we walked to raise funds and awareness during the American Heart Association's Start! Heart Walk in Rocky Mount on October 24. We raised more than $1,000 in 2009, bringing the total amount raised for the past three years to nearly $3,000!
Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk
Members of HensonFuerst joined others in the fight to end Alzheimer's disease during the Memory Walk on October 3. As an event sponsor, the law firm helped raise awareness and funds to battle this disease, which affects more than five million people in the United States.
HensonFuerst Sponsors 6th Annual La Ley Festival
HensonFuerst took part in 96.9 FM's Sixth Annual La Ley Festival on Saturday, August 13, by hosting a tent where members of the law firm met festival-goers, passed out t-shirts and balloons, and held hourly giveaways for coolers. Bilingual members of the firm, including attorney Adam Foggia, also were on hand to answer patrons' questions.
American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure
Led by team captain Thomas Henson, Jr., the HensonFuerst Cycling Team rode in the Tour de Cure in Cary, North Carolina, on June 6 to support the American Diabetes Association's mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. The team raised more than $13,000 for this year's event, surpassing their goal of $10,000.
Rocky Mount Fun Run for Charities
On May 30, the members of HensonFuerst raised more than $350 for local charities during the Rocky Mount Fun Run for Charities. The funds were matched by the Fun Run's official sponsor Reach Out Rocky Mount. Congratulations to all who participated in the event!
Ride of Silence
White Lake Triathlon
Attorneys David Henson and Carma Henson competed in the White Lake Triathlon on May 10. The event benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and entails a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride, and a 13.1 mile run.
Relay For Life
We took part in the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Nash County, where they joined others to celebrate survivorship, remember those who lost their lives to cancer, and raise funds to fight the disease.
To celebrate raising more than $6,600 for our Hope Blooms community project, we joined community members, cancer survivors, and family members for a day of remembrance and a day of planting more than 2,600 daffodil bulbs. Started in 2006 as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, the firm has raised more than $24,000 since starting the Hope Blooms Project.
Tri Roanoke Valley Sprint Triathlon
Video PSA Contest on Bicycle Safety
As part of our cycling safety video contest, we challenged local high school students to create unique and compelling PSAs that encourage teens to understand the importance of safe cycling.
Coats for Kids
After hearing that more than 500 students at Williford Elementary School in Rocky Mount didn't have proper winter clothing, we contributed coats, hats, gloves, socks, and underclothes to the school. We donated in conjunction with Coats for Kids, a program that distributes the much-needed winter wear.
