Stork Craft Crib Recall

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA PERSONAL INJURY LAWYER

The largest crib recall in U.S. history has been announced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall includes 2.1 million drop-side cribs manufactured by Stork Craft, 147,000 of which carry the Fisher-Price logo. The recall includes Stork Craft cribs manufactured and sold between 1993 and 2009.

The recalled cribs were sold in different styles and finishes at a variety of retailers, including BJ’s Wholesale Club, J.C. Penney, Kmart, Meijer, Sears, USA Baby, and Wal-Mart. They were also sold online at Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com, Target.com, and Walmart.com from January 1993 through October 2009 for between $100 and $400.

Drop-Side Cribs Cause Suffocation, Falls

One of the most popular designs, drop-side cribs allow one side of the crib to lower and provide easy access to the child. However, the drop-side plastic hardware can deform, wear down, and easily break. When this happens, a space between the drop-side and the crib mattress is created. Infants and toddlers become trapped in this space and can suffocate in a very short period of time—a few moments are all it takes.

Drop-side cribs are notoriously difficult to assemble correctly, and often parts are installed upside down, which poses further risk to the child. When the drop-side of a crib becomes completely detached, the child can fall out, resulting in severe trauma ranging from broken bones to brain injury.

What to Do If You Own a Recalled Crib

According to the CPSC, “parents and caregivers should immediately stop using the recalled cribs, wait for the free repair kit, and not attempt to fix the cribs without the kit. They should find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby.”
