Defective Hip Implant $1.43 Billion Settlement

The hip replacement manufacturer Stryker announced a deal to settle thousands of lawsuits from injured patients. The company will pay at least $1.43 billion, but Stryker believes the ultimate dollar figure will be significantly higher, given the extreme health problems caused by the defective implants.

Stryker has had to recall two hip replacement devices–the Rejuvenate and the ABG II modular-neck stems–due to risks of corrosion and “fretting,” which is when portions of the hip replacement are worn away by abrasion. The corrosion may cause harmful tissue reactions in the hip area, which leads to pain and/or swelling.  Other adverse effects can include bone damage, tissue death (or “necrosis”), or metallosis–when metal debris causes inflammation in the surrounding tissue. This type of inflammation may cause long-term, or even permanent damage.

HensonFuerst Attorneys have been handling these claims for several years now, and we represent a number of plaintiffs. We are gratified to see that Stryker has stepped up to take responsibility for the damage caused by their product by agreeing to this settlement.

If you or someone you love has had one of the recalled Stryker hip replacement devices, give us a call to discuss your legal options. You may be eligible to receive a portion of the settlement. We’re available to take your call at 1-800-4-LAWMED. Life doesn’t wait…call HensonFuerst today.
