A new study has identified patterns in the brain that can not only quantify and qualify pain, but can also show a drug is working to treat the pain. Experts say the groundbreaking research could offer a plethora of applications, including the prevention of drug injuries due to overdoses or corroborating claims for those seeking Social Security, Workers’ Compensation, or Veterans Disability Benefits.
An article from WRAL News stated researchers at Columbia University preformed four experiments that each provided what have been called “provocative” findings. Each of the experiments involved having subjects undergo a Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) while being subjected to heated objects being placed on their arm. The images project vibrant colors in portions of the brain when pain is felt, allowing researchers to “see” pain in participant’s brains.
The first experiment identified a baseline brain pattern for pain versus the anticipation of it. The second experiment simply validated the findings of the first. Next, researchers were able to identify the difference between social and emotional pain. They finally examined brain patterns showing the effectiveness of certain medications in the treatment of pain.
