Further disturbing news revealed inspections showed the company had not only several tests that showed salmonella contamination but also cockroaches, a leaky roof and filthy equipment, the FDA has said. Viewers to this HensonFuerst Nursing Home blog were alerted in January to the salmonella outbreak involving peanut butter & peanut paste shipped to nursing homes from Peanut Corporation of America.  Heightened vigilance is encouraged for those viewers who oversee the care of family and friends entrusted to nursing home care.

Local Plant With Connection to Salmonella Remains Closed; Extent of Outbreak Remains Unclear

Peanut butter paste from a Cary, North Carolina, cracker factory owned by the Kellogg Company’s Austin Quality Foods division has been found to contain the same strain of salmonella that has sickened more than 500 people, including North Carolinians. As deaths have been attributed to this salmonella outbreak, blog viewers are encouraged to remain especially vigilant when overseeing the care and nutritional services provided to friends and family in nursing home care.

Salmonella-Tainted Peanut Butter Found at Nursing Homes

The Ohio Department of Health says it has identified three cases of salmonella in Portage County that are linked to the national outbreak linked to peanut butter products. In another case, involving the death of a nursing home patient in Minnesota, a large tub at the facility has been found to be contaminated with the same strain of salmonella which has sickened people throughout the United States.

Does the Nationwide Outbreak of Salmonella Tied to Peanut Butter and Peanut Paste Affect Nursing Home Patients?

Many news outlets are reporting that peanut butter and peanut paste contaminated with a specific strain of bacteria called salmonella typhimurium may have wound up at nursing homes. According to today’s USA TODAY, the Peanut Corp. of America (PCA) made these products in its Blakely, Ga., plant and sold them to institutions such as schools, hospitals and nursing homes, and to food manufacturers across the country. Persons with family members and friends in nursing home case should make inquiries of the home’s management about the source of peanut butter products served to patients.
