December 12th, 2013

Curve in Mountains

U.S. 64 will be upgraded to interstate highway status between Raleigh and Rocky Mount, and renamed I-495.

According to a story in the News & Observer, DOT will widen the inside and outside shoulders of this part of the highway to meet interstate standards. These improvements will take place “as part of normally scheduled reconstruction activities along the route.”

“Designation of a direct Interstate connection between Raleigh and I-95 is critical to creating new economic developments opportunities and supporting the future mobility of this region,” [Governor Pat] McCrory said in a news release. “This designation is an important part of our future vision for transportation in North Carolina and is key to promoting job creation and aligning our infrastructure with commerce activity.”

What Else It Means
While some people are excited about the possibility of a more high-profile highway in the area and what it will mean for business, other folks are less than thrilled.
Landowners along that corridor should anticipate condemnation of their properties, in whole or in part, to allow the widening. When we learn more details, we’ll share them with you. Attorney Anne D. Fisher, who leads our land condemnation division, is always available for questions (1-800-4-LAWMED).
