Officials Hope New NC Bike Walk Website Will Reduce North Carolina Bicycle Accident Rates

Since data shows North Carolina has the ninth highest bicyclist and pedestrian fatality rate in the nation, officials have been working to reduce the number of accidents involving cyclists and walkers by raising safety awareness. Now, the North Carolina Department of Transportation has launched a new website dedicated to reaching this goal.

The Walk Bike NC campaign was initiated in 2013 and creates a safer and more efficient way to travel the state by foot or pedal. The campaign hopes to reduce North Carolina bicycle accident and pedestrian collision numbers through five different components, including: safety, mobility, health, economy, and environment.

According to an article from the Elkin Tribune, the campaign’s new website not only features information about cycling laws and best safety practices, but also provides a mapping feature that can provide directions utilizing North Carolina’s signed bicycle routes. These directions can also be mapped to provide riders with an elevation profile for their route, which can make choosing a new route easier for both state residents and cycling tourists.

The North Carolina personal injury lawyers with HensonFuerst recognize the importance of keeping safety in mind while cycling or walking along our state’s roads. That’s why we would like to remind motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians alike of the need to share the road.
