One Worker Killed And Another Injured At North Carolina Plant

February 14, 2013

A 39-year-old worker at a Catawba, North Carolina, plant was killed and another was seriously injured as the result of what officials believe may have been a case of exposure to hazardous chemicals. According to the Rock Hill Herald, the incident occurred on Tuesday, January 22, at 1:30 a.m. at the Resolute Forest Products facility.

Reports indicate the victims were working as part of a crew hired to clean a large chemical tank in the plant’s power generating facility. There has been no information released about the type of incident that may have occurred, but officials say they have not ruled out the possibility involving Toxic Exposure to hazardous chemicals.

The circumstances surrounding the most recent accident are similar to those of a case that occurred at the plant in May 2012, where four employees suffered second and third degree chemical burns after a suction valve failed and sprayed the men with a hazardous mixture of sodium hydroxide. One month later, another worker suffered serious injuries after an incident of toxic exposure to the dangerous chemical.

The law states employers have a responsibility to ensure workers are safe while performing duties and failure to do so may be considered negligence in the event of an accident.
