Halloween is almost here. This is one of the most anticipated holidays for children, but there are some pretty concerning safety facts that you should know.
Did you know that on average twice as many children are injured on Halloween compared with any other day of the year?
For moms and dads, often there is a fine line between Halloween fun and safety concerns.
Here are a few basic safety rules to discuss with children:
- Stay On An Approved Route – Instruct your children to travel only on a familiar approved route. Review the neighborhood streets with your children and map out the areas in which they are allowed to trick or treat. Make sure the streets at night are well-lit areas.
- No Shortcuts – Inform children to not take short cuts through yards, parks, back alleys or dimly lit, less traveled areas. Be sure to impress upon them the importance of staying on populated paths during Halloween.
- Do Not Enter – Tell your children never to enter a stranger’s house. Remind children not to get into anyone’s car and always to remain with the group and teen/adult supervisor.
- Be Aware of Your Surroundings – Inform children to put electronic devices away and keep their heads up. It is important for children to understand it is enjoyable to take a selfie and text friends about the fun they are having, however there is also uneven terrain and cars that are driving in the neighborhood to be aware of. Explain it can be very dangerous if you don’t pay careful attention to everything that is going on around you.
- Don’t Rush – Walk, don’t run, house to house or across the street. Remind children to obey all traffic laws and to cross at an intersection if there is one. Stop at the corner, and look carefully to the left, right and left again before crossing the street.
- Don’t Eat Any Candy That Is Unwrapped or Open Food
