Tort Reform Puts Your Rights At Risk

As our client, you’ll discover very quickly that we take a lot of pride in what we do. Our staff is proud to extend exceptional customer service to our clients and their families. Our lawyers are proud to stand up to the insurance companies on behalf of accident victims. Our partners are proud to have built a safe haven for injured people in North Carolina. But most of all, we’re proud to be a part of the greatest justice system in the world.

In the United States, any individual, regardless of race, gender, or socio-economic status, can stand up for himself or herself in a court of law. That freedom is one of the things that makes our nation great, and it is what sets us apart from many countries around the world. Sadly, large corporations and political interests are putting that freedom in jeopardy through tort reform.

Tort reform is proposed legislation that limits the ability of individuals to bring lawsuits against individuals, corporations, or the government. It also limits the amount of money individuals can obtain in a lawsuit. Proponents of tort reform claim our courts are overrun with frivolous lawsuits, an epidemic that tort reform would solve. That is a ridiculous assertion. There is no epidemic of frivolous lawsuits. Our justice system has checks and balances in place to ensure frivolous lawsuits never make it into the court system. So why are corporations and politicians pushing for it?

It’s actually quite simple.

Restricting the rights of accident victims to seek compensation for negligent behavior gives corporations more latitude to continue that behavior, putting American consumers at risk. The politicians need these corporations’ support, so they push for tort reform.

At HensonFuerst, we firmly stand against tort reform, because it would take away the rights of the injured people of North Carolina. We’ve spent our careers protecting those rights, and we’re not going to stop anytime soon. If you’ve been injured in a car accident, you have the right to seek compensation for your injuries, and we’d be proud to help you in that pursuit.
