Traumatic Brain Injury: What it Is, Symptoms, and Common Misconceptions

September is National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month. Such injuries can have devastating consequences—often requiring a lifetime of medical care and costly rehabilitation. Very often, the types of events which cause Spinal Cord Injuries may also result in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

With this in mind, attorney Thomas Henson of Henson Fuerst recently appeared with host Bill LuMaye to discuss Traumatic Brain Injuries on Community Matters. The program aired on The CW22 and myRDC 28. You may view this segment of the show below:

In this first segment, Mr. Henson examines exactly what constitutes a Traumatic Brain Injury. Part Two looks at laws written to raise awareness of TBI dangers. Part Three will discuss the resources available to help victims of TBIs and their families through the recovery process.

TBI Facts & Misunderstandings

A TBI is any form of blow or jolt to the head which results in a disruption of brain function. Doctors classify TBIs as mild to severe; rated from a concussion, to bleeding on the brain, to coma. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), TBIs affect approximately 1.5 Million people in the U.S. each year.

One of the most common misconceptions is that TBIs can only result from a direct blow to the head. Rather, any severe jolts to the body—which transfer energy to the skull—can also cause trauma to the brain. This includes Shaken Baby Syndrome and other movement-related injuries.

Potential Symptoms

To help determine if a patient has suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury, a doctor will perform a thorough physical exam to check for the following symptoms:

  • Cognitive Issues
  • Persistent Headache
  • Fuzziness of Thought
  • Loss of Awareness
  • Undue Fatigue
  • Blurred Vision
