Two Triangle Hospitals Receive C Grades for Safety

April 30th, 2018

WakeMed Cary, Duke University Hospital Score Below Average

Injuries, accidents, infections, and hospital errors account for up to 440,000 patient deaths a year. To educate the public—and hold hospitals to the highest standards of care—the nonprofit Leapfrog Group has released its latest safety report on healthcare facilities in the United States. Locally, both WakeMed Cary and Duke University Hospital received C ratings. To read the full article, click here.

According to Leapfrog, Duke had more hospital-acquired infections, surgical complications, bed sores, and patient falls than average—and scored poorly in “effective leadership to prevent errors.” WakeMed scored below average in four out of five infection categories—as well as patient falls, bed sores, and surgical complications.

The Leapfrog Safety Grade—released twice a year— assigns nearly 2,500 acute-care hospitals in the U.S. letter grades of A through F based on 27 performance metrics. Their ratings come from the organization’s own survey—as well as data provided by:

  • Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
  • Agency for Healthcare Research Quality
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • American Hospital Association
  • Health Information Technology Supplement

While such information may deter some from visiting these hospitals, Leapfrog advises the public to never reject emergency treatment based on a hospital’s safety score. Instead, they should consult their doctor on the best hospitals for planned, elective procedures.
